Founded in reaction to the result of the referendum on leaving the European Union, The New European openly campaigns for the cancellation of Brexit, described as “a potential disaster for the United Kingdom and the European Union”. Published on July 8, 2016, the first issue carried the slogan “the ephemeral newspaper of the 48%”in reference to the minority of anti-Brexit voters.
Initially created for only four issues, the weekly quickly met with some success among the Europhile readership and now has some 8,000 subscribers. Published by the Archant group, which also owns several newspapers in the east of England, The New European primarily deals with current events linked to Brexit but also explores various themes relating to Europe, culture, sport and defense. Subjects little covered in the rest of the mainstream British press. Its regular contributors include Alastair Campbell and Andrew Adonis, two close friends of former Labor Prime Minister Tony Blair.
