The students of the Sidney-Bechet middle school relay class organized plant sales during the end-of-year parent-teacher meetings. The 270 euros they collected were donated yesterday to SOS Méditerranée. “It’s an association that helps migrants at sea and brings them back to the coast. This check is mainly intended for their boat, which costs 26,000 euros per trip”explains the education assistant, Marine Frisina.

Raising awareness of the situation of migrants

The partnership between the college and SOS Méditerranée began last year. Sonia Duflos, the relay class coordinator, had the students work on a film which recounts the association’s missions. She wanted to renew this partnership this year, this time by organizing the famous plant sale.

The students thought of everything: the type of plants to buy – succulents, easy to maintain -, the pots that go with them, they spoke to the college’s administrative services on budgetary issues, repotted the plants… and organized the sale. In addition to the organization, the objective was also to raise awareness of the missions of SOS Méditerranée and the situation of migrants.

“We clearly saw that it affected them”

“We screened the film ”Les Nageuses”, which tells the true story of two Syrian sisters, forced to flee their country because of the war”says Marine Frisina. Their excellent swimming skills will help them on this journey. One of them also competed at the Rio Olympics in 2016. “We could see that it touched them, because when the parents asked them questions about the association, they answered without hesitation”smiles Marine Frisina. Who is already thinking about the next project she is going to put together, in January.
