After two and a half years of work, Avignon Center station unveils a green square redesigned for soft mobility. This project, worth 20.25 million euros, makes this station a true multimodal exchange hub.
On Wednesday December 18, Avignon Center station revealed its new face after two and a half years of work. This vast project, amounting to 20.25 million euroshas made it possible to transform the station and its square into a true multimodal exchange hub.
One of the strong points of this renovation is the new forecourt, greened and redeveloped to favor pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users. The work made it possible to fmake the journey of travelers easier, rethink the organization of mobility and to make connections simpler between the city, the bus station, bus and tram stops.
More trees on the forecourt of Avignon Center station
Infrastructure dedicated to bicycles has been particularly strengthened with nearly 500 locationsdistributed between two secure lockers, double-decker racks and an inflation station. Added to this are new businesses, such as the restaurant “Le Quai des Saveurs”, which will open its doors this Thursday, December 19.
With 13,000 m² redesigned, this space now welcomes 150 trees and shrubsincreasing the share of green spaces from 6% to 35%. “Vegetation also plays a major role in the fight against heat islands,” recalls the South Paca Region in a press release.
Other work planned for 2025
The work was not limited to the forecourt. The facade of the Avignon Center station building, on the square side, has been renovated. Inside the place, the spaces have also been restored. “ The volumes of the central hall and its ceiling with decorated beams have been highlighted. The technical installations have been brought up to standard. These developments are supplemented by the creation of new waiting areas, services and shops at the station,” lists the South Paca Region. Work to develop the east wing of the station is underway.
A final phase of work is planned for 2025. It concerns the upper square of the pedestrian link which provides access to the bus station as well as the car park and the station drop-off point.
