According to the latest INSEE study released on December 19, 5,170,312 people live in Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur on January 1, 20222, i.e. 0.49% more than over the period from 2016 to 2021.
The city of Marseille remains the second largest in France, with 877,215 inhabitants. There too, the population is increasing. The last census was in fact 873,076 inhabitants in the Marseille city.
The population is increasing in Marseille
If Paris loses inhabitants (-0.59%), the Provençal capital is progressing. She actually wins 0.29% more populationbetween the “natural balance” of +0.53% and the “apparent migration balance” of -0.25%, stipulate the INSEE figures.
Natural and migratory balance
The natural balance is the difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths calculated most often during a year.
The apparent migratory balance, for its part, can be calculated as soon as the population figures from the first analysis of the census bulletins called “Legal populations” are available. This is not new data, it has always been calculated and disseminated during traditional censuses.
Lyon, Toulouse and Nice then follow in terms of population, with, here too, an increasing number of inhabitants.
