Cécile Muschotti: “Alone against the extreme right in Toulon, but determined not to give an inch to their excesses”
Toulon, December 19, 2024 – This morning, Amaury Navarranne, elected from the National Rally, once again proved that the far right has lost none of its hateful DNA. Comparing “invasive alien species” to human beings under the guise of a “joke” is not humor, but rather an insidious and outrageous provocation. It is a direct attack on the republican values that we have a duty to defend in our institutions.
But where are the Republican votes? Where are the convictions?
Today, I am the only one to be publicly outraged, the only one to remember that dignity and equality cannot be negotiated. Faced with this hate speech, I note with bitterness the complicit or embarrassed silence of a large part of the elected officials, as if the trivialization of the ideas of the RN had become inevitable.
The far right is not a simple actor in the democratic debate: it is a threat to democracy itself.
In Toulon, Amaury Navarranne is only the visible part of the iceberg. He acts hand in hand with Laure Lavalette, spokesperson for Marine Le Pen, who surrounds herself with collaborators known for their racist, anti-Semitic and sexist tweets. Alongside Frédéric Boccaletti, convicted of violence with weapons and fan of the dissemination of negationist works, they form a trio whose ideology is based on hatred, division and violence.
These local figures of the extreme right must not deceive. Beneath their calculated smiles and populist speeches hide positions profoundly contrary to republican values.
I say it clearly: this fight against the RN in Toulon, I am leading it alone. But I won’t give up.
I call on all republican forces to wake up, to mobilize and to understand that allowing these discourses to prosper means accepting that tomorrow, our republican values will be subverted. RN elected officials do not only represent a local threat: their influence fuels a national drift that fractures our society.
The Republic demands from each of its representatives political courage commensurate with the challenges posed by the extreme right. I refuse to give in to silence or indifference. Toulon deserves better than the RN and its professional provocateurs
