The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced on December 17, 2024 in the House of Advisors a project aimed at increasing the storage capacity of Morocco’s petroleum products by 1.8 million cubic meters by 2030, the equivalent of 41 additional days of national consumption. This initiative is part of a policy aimed at strengthening the energy supply in the Kingdom.
These projects, supported by the private sector, will have an investment cost of 5 billion dirhams and will allow the creation of more than 3,600 direct jobs, in addition to thousands of indirect jobs. They help improve the country’s energy security in the long term.
In the field of renewable energies, the minister highlighted that electricity production capacity reached 5,300 megawatts at the end of August 2024, an increase of 7.3% during the current government mandate. Wind power has, for the first time, surpassed hydropower in terms of production.
The renewable energy sector also contributed to 20% of national electricity demand, with investments increasing fivefold since 2021, reaching 15 billion dirhams per year. The total investment planned for these projects amounts to 30 billion dirhams.
