Traffic controllers from Sécurité Routière Québec made a surprising discovery on Tuesday after intercepting a truck traveling on Highway 20 in the Saint-Louis-de-Blandford sector.

The inspectors allegedly discovered possible contraband cigarettes in the box of the truck.

According to information from Sébastien Drolet, public relations agent for Sécurité Routière Québec, it was a road controller instructor, accompanied by two road controllers in training, who made the discovery.

They were stationed near a rest stop at km 228 in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford when they saw the truck “which looked heavy and whose tires were crushed. »

They chose to intercept it to check for a possible overload of the truck.

Sébastien Drolet says that by asking the driver questions, the road inspectors realize that his story is “a little vague. » The merchandise it is transporting and its destination are difficult for controllers to clarify.

They will finally ask to open the truck box. Upon opening, traffic controllers realized that the contents of the cargo space “appeared to be contraband cigarettes.” »

The driver, an Ontario resident, was placed under arrest.

From this moment, the file is transferred to the Sûreté du Québec police officers who will continue the investigation.

A report on the seizures is still awaited.
