Prices represented the great unknown of the Dantesque project of the State of Geneva: creating underground networks intended for thermal energy. In 2022, the people of Geneva gave the green light by voting in a large majority, almost 80% of voters, in favor of the monopoly of SIG on structuring thermal networks (RTS).

This system should accelerate the energy transition. By 2050, the structuring networks will cover more than 50% of the canton’s heat demand with 100% renewable energy, announced the SIG and the government during a press conference. To achieve this objective, the GIS will connect 6,800 buildings, the equivalent of 90% of the rental stock. By 2030, SIG plans to invest 1.5 billion francs to produce renewable energy, such as at the Aïre wastewater treatment plant, and to build nearly a hundred additional kilometers of pipes. . Which will lead to a lot of work. “The SIGs will make an effort to communicate with citizens. These projects are at the service of the community,” assures Robert Cramer, president of the board of directors of the public authority. The city of Geneva, a municipality which, due to its density, will accommodate a majority of the pipes, will be strongly affected by traffic obstructions.
