Belgium has lost two weeks of winter due to global warming. In fact, according to an independent study, in our country we have lost 14 days during which the temperature previously fell below 0°C.
Winter is fast approaching, but temperatures still don’t drop below 0 degrees. “The climate is getting milder. We have less cold winters“, remarks a Liège resident. “Before, there was already snow on St. Nicholas Day and at Christmas. Now it’s all in the past“, adds another person.
2024 should break another record
Over the past decade, Belgium has recorded an average of 68 days of winter with temperatures above 0 degrees. Without global warming, this number would be 53 days, a difference of 15 days. “All this is confirmed from year to year. And these years are also warmer. 2024 should again break a record, although, from our point of view, it is a year that we consider bad“, estimates an expert.
Milder winters, warmer summers
In total, 123 countries in the northern hemisphere were studied. In Belgium, we have observed 13 fewer days of frost over the last thirty years. Summers are expected to continue to warm more than winters. “With strong warming, winters will be milder, 3 to 4 degrees warmer than the current period. For summers, we rather expect a rise of 6 to 7 degrees“, he concludes.
Snowfall is also less abundant, with a decrease of 20% to 30% in the Ardennes. In our country, the last big cold spell dates back around ten years.
