A greener Senegal: Terra, the 100% local electric motorcycle

Senegalese start-up Proxy eMobility has unveiled Terra, its very first electric motorcycle designed to meet the growing needs for sustainable and affordable mobility in Africa. This project, announced in Dakar, aims to reduce carbon emissions in a country where thermal vehicles still largely dominate.

Terra is designed to be both robust and adapted to African realities. It incorporates a removable and rechargeable battery at home or on dedicated stations, with an autonomy of approximately 100 kilometers per charge. These characteristics meet the needs of urban and peri-urban users while limiting dependence on fossil fuels.

The start-up, founded by local entrepreneurs, relies on an inclusive model by integrating community partners and facilitating access to micro-credits to enable motorcycle taxi drivers and small businesses to adopt this technology.

The launch of Terra comes against a backdrop of African governments working to encourage the energy transition. Senegal, in particular, recently implemented tax incentives for electric vehicles, an initiative welcomed by industry players.

Proxy eMobility also aims to establish a network of charging stations in major cities across the country. This infrastructure aims to reduce logistical barriers for potential users while promoting the creation of local jobs in installation and maintenance.

According to the founders, this project is proof that technological innovation can be a driver of sustainable development. Terra represents a key step in democratizing access to electric mobility in West Africa and could inspire other similar initiatives across the continent.
