If you are a resident of the Bacalan district, you have probably noticed that your local library has been closed since September. But don’t panic: it won’t last long! In the meantime, an ambitious new project is taking shape, promising to transform the space into a modern and accessible place, ready to meet the growing needs of the neighborhood.
An ambitious transformation
The Bacalan libraryopen in the 1960sno longer met current standards. It had become too small to accommodate the growing population of the area. So, time for reconstruction! From here 2026the future “Rene Maran Bacalan Library” will extend over 1200 m². She will pay tribute to the Martinican writer René Marana symbol of cultural identity, and will offer much more than books.
A versatile space for everyone
Expect to discover a place where culture takes all kinds of forms: 30,000 worksof the comicsof the DVDbut also video and board games. Diversified spaces, such as study roomand cafe with terraceof the spaces for associationsand even a workshop of repair and of creationwill be there to offer you a complete framework of relaxation and creativity. This project aims to make the library a real center of life for the inhabitants of Bacalan.
Continuity of service
Although the work will last until the start of the 2026 school year, a “Point Bibli” was opened to Blue City Forum, rue Achard. It allows users to continue to borrow books and obtain advice from librarians on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s a great way to maintain the cultural connection, while waiting for the long-awaited reopening.
This project is a great promise for the future of Bacalan and its inhabitants, and you will not fail to enjoy this new enriched space as soon as it opens.
