While the Chido cyclones devastated Mayottewhose provisional toll shows 22 deaths, elected officials of the Montpellier municipal council voted unanimously aid of €10,000. An island on which the opposition councilor is also located Clothilde Ollier.
Subsidy and support for students
As a preamble to the municipal council, the elected representatives of Montpellier unanimously voted for a grant of €10,000 to support the victims of Cyclone Chido which devastated the island of Mayotte this Saturday. A system set up in partnership with the Association of Mayors of France which collects this aid in connection with the civil protection present on site.
In addition, with solidarity associations focused on the territory’s overseas territories, a support system for the 249 Mahorese students present in Montpellier has already been put in place. Other solidarity actions will be deployed in the coming weeks.
Clothilde Ollier in Mayotte
Furthermore, on a business trip to provide training in labor law, opposition municipal councilor Clothilde Ollier was in Mayotte when the cyclone struck. Through the voice of her political group, MUPES, she bears witness to “a dramatic situation: water shortage, largely destroyed infrastructure and residents plunged into even greater precariousness. Added to this is insufficient crisis management and public policies, which for too long have abandoned Mayotte, the poorest department in the French Republic.”
Although she fortunately escaped the worst, one of her relatives who was able to contact her recently confided his concern and particularly trying conditions. “Her hotel room was destroyed, she has to manage to find somewhere to sleep and something to eat. She hasn’t had a drink in two days, she has headaches. It’s 35°C. You can tell from her voice that she is very tired. And she saw horrible things… Michaël Delafosse made a point, through Alenka Doulain, of expressing the support of the municipal council, specifying: “When she returns, she will be very valuable”.
Finally, a minute of silence was observed by the municipal council in tribute to all the victims of Cyclone Chido.
