The Senegalese Minister of Energy, Oil and Mines, Birame Soulèye Diop, affirmed, Monday December 16, 2024, that Senegal benefits from an ecosystem conducive to the production of a diversified and sustainable energy mix. He stressed that his ministry is actively engaged in the development of a “regulatory framework for integrated planning of the electricity sector”, in order to guarantee optimal energy production for the country.

In his opening speech during a validation workshop of a support program for the development of the master plan for electricity supply in Senegal, the minister insisted on the importance of planning in the electricity sector. energy. He clarified that this approach is essential to ensure that the best options are taken, thus guaranteeing citizens continuous, affordable and sustainable access to energy. In addition, the planning aims to reduce Senegal’s dependence on external markets for energy supplies.

Birame Soulèye Diop also discussed the efforts made by his ministry to create an integrated regulatory framework for energy planning. This framework includes detailed modeling to anticipate changes in energy demand and make informed decisions. “The establishment of this framework is necessary to respond proactively to changing energy demands, by making targeted investments in the development of modern infrastructure, capable of supporting reliable, sustainable and cost-effective energy production. low cost,” he explained.

The minister also welcomed the valuable support of German cooperation and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in the training of Senegalese technicians in modeling and energy planning. He reaffirmed the government’s desire to guarantee all Senegalese access to quality energy, while maintaining affordable costs.

Finally, Birame Soulèye Diop announced that the national electricity company (SENELEC), placed under the supervision of his ministry, is currently working on a project to transform and convert its power stations. The objective is to enable these infrastructures to produce solar energy and run on gas, thus strengthening the country’s energy transition.
