“When (Canada Post) doesn’t get what it wants, it takes the means to get it,” criticized Stéphane Genest during an interview on Noovo Info.

Admitting that Ottawa’s decision was not the expected scenario, Mr. Genest points the finger at Canada Post’s lack of will during the negotiations.

“We are being lied to by Canada Post. We are told that it is hard to compete. But entrepreneurs tell us that when Canada Post is not there, it hurts them, because it is more expensive to look elsewhere,” lamented the union president.

Despite everything, Canada Post employees kept their spirits up on Tuesday when they returned to work, assures Mr. Genest. “People were courageous.”

However, employees had to “tighten their belts” during the month of strike, who did not receive a salary and had to live on relief benefits. “This is not what we wanted,” concluded Mr. Genest.

The Minister of Labor, Steven MacKinnon, ordered on Friday the extension of the current collective agreements in addition to the return to work of the 55,000 employees on strike since November 15.

A commission of inquiry into labor relations must look into “the structural questions of the conflict”. A report will be published on May 15 which will be used by both parties to negotiate collective agreements, Steven MacKinnon wrote on X on Monday.
