SENEGAL-ECONOMY / Exploitation of mining resources: a plea for the involvement of experts – Senegalese press agency

Dakar, Dec 17 (APS) – The president of the National Order of Experts of Senegal, El Hadji Diop, wished, Tuesday, in Dakar, the involvement of experts in mining resources in their exploitation.

”Senegal must […] manages to demonstrate that it is possible to have mining resources while developing other sectors of activity such as agriculture, livestock, tourism, by opening up to practitioners,” said Mr. Diop.

He participated in a panel on the governance of extractive industries in Senegal.

Several Asian countries have developed their mining industries without leaving other sectors of the economy behind, he said.

”It is not enough to have a good vision,” continued Mr. Diop, believing that public authorities must also involve experts in the governance of the country’s resources.

He says he wants natural resources to be managed well enough to finance the country’s infrastructure, particularly health infrastructure.

”The mining sector does not generally create sovereign funds, it generally creates local development funds,” said Cheikh Tidiane Touré, an expert in mining contracts.

”Steps have been taken with the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations” with a view to good management of revenues from the country’s natural resources, he said, adding: ”You realize that the public is not sufficiently informed.”
