The sub-prefect Emmanuel Fevre, the firefighters, the gendarmes, the heads of establishments and dozens of students all had their eyes fixed on this white and green bus quietly overturning near the Brioude multipurpose room , at the end of last week. On board were a dozen high school students. For the first time, this bus belonging to the company specializing in risk prevention Agora formations made a stopover in the Saint-Julien city. The objective of this demonstration was simple: to show the actions to be mastered in the event of an accident.
It was only after about ten minutes horizontally that the second-year students from La Fayette high school were finally able to exit through the ventilation. “It was impressive,” commented Zoé and Thalie. “We were on the right of the bus, so our feet were in the air. It was a little scary, but it was important to do it!” The action was then repeated all day with also the second year students from Saint-Julien, Erea and Brioude-Bonnefont.
Adult responsibility
This road awareness day, also marked by workshops on the dangers of alcohol, drugs or speed while driving (see below), was at the initiative of the sub-prefecture. It was born from an observation: there are too many traffic accidents involving young drivers. “Since I took office in 2023, there have been two deaths, recalled Emmanuel Fevre. It may not seem like much, but it is a lot. However, it is our responsibility as adults to protect young people, by raising awareness in particular.” He thus welcomed this event which brought together some 300 second-year students from the district.
Since January 1, 2024, there have been 27 traffic accidents around Brioude. They caused 36 injuries and the death of two people. These figures are higher in the districts of Puy-en-Velay (119 accidents) and Yssingeaux (42).
Road safety workshops for 300 Brivadoi high school students
The second year students participated in several workshops. One of them was proposed by the Departmental Association for Educational Transport in Public Education. It consisted of highlighting the blind spots that a school bus has, thus alerting high school students to the need to be vigilant when traveling nearby.
The prefecture's road safety department and the Lempdes-sur-Allagnon motorized gendarmerie brigade reminded the students of the dangers of drugs and alcohol while driving. The gendarmerie also took the opportunity to present some accessories such as the air-bag vest, helmets, breathalyzers, as well as this on-board radar.
