The Minister of Finance therefore waited almost until the end of the parliamentary session to present the fall economic statement, since Canadian elected officials will leave Ottawa for the holiday break on Wednesday, December 18.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer has already estimated that the government will exceed its own budgetary safeguards with a deficit of $46.8 billion for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. (new window). The Liberal government has not specified whether it will respect its own promise not to exceed $40 billion in deficit this year.

Parliamentary work paralyzed

The work of the House of Commons is currently paralyzed by the Conservatives, which could force Ms. Freeland to table the document outside the parliamentary precinct.
