(Keystone-ATS) The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Sunday afternoon on the X platform that it was closely monitoring the situation following the latest developments in Syria.

Around 60 people are registered in the register of Swiss abroad for Syria, another person is registered on “Travel Admin” as a person passing through, the FDFA told Keystone-ATS.

No request for consular assistance has been submitted at this time. The FDFA Helpline for Syria did not receive any calls.

Individual responsibility

The DFA does not organize departures. The principles of individual responsibility apply in accordance with the law on Swiss Abroad.

The FDFA is represented by an SDC humanitarian office in Syria, which remains operational. All FDFA employees in Syria are doing well.

Since April 2011, the FDFA has generally advised against travel and stays in Syria.

End of reign

Leader Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria ended on Sunday, according to the country’s military and its former protecting power, Russia. On November 27, the civil war in Syria, which has lasted since 2011, suddenly reignited with the offensive of the Islamist alliance Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

In a short time, the insurgents took control of many localities. It was only on Saturday that the rebels captured the strategic city of Homs. On Sunday, rebel groups took control of the capital Damascus.
