Farm threatened by rising water levels in the Channel: what the Conservatoire du

What future for the Marais farm, threatened by rising water levels, in Montmartin-sur-Mer (Manche)? The response was provided by the Conservatoire du Littoral on Tuesday December 3, 2024, through a press release.

A site deemed vulnerable

Until Tuesday November 19, 2024, the Marais farm was owned by the Lecordier family, who had to move. The Conservatoire du Littoral, in partnership with the Region, bought the operation, “10 hectares of meadows and various buildings which were used for the sheep farm of the former owner, as a tourist reception area and residential house”.

The Conservatory's project is to “renaturation of the site which will be implemented in the coming years” in this “sector very vulnerable to the risk of flooding by marine submersion, erosion of the dune cord and overflowing of the Passevin watercourse”. For the organization, the terrain must be adapted to the consequences of climate change.

Buildings demolished within two years

“It’s about restoring aquatic environments, salt meadow grasses which are in sharp decline at the local and European level, but also meadows. » For that, “in the next two years”, the buildings on the site will be demolished. “Prior studies will be necessary as well as the definition of the containment system with the community. »

The Marais farm renaturation project will be carried out with the help of numerous partners, such as the Mixed Syndicate of Littoral Spaces of La Manche, the commune of Montmartin-sur-Mer, Coutances Mer et bocage, the Water Agency Seine Normandy, the Normandy region and state services.
