The results of the latest international Timms study have just been published on the website of the Ministry of National Education. Timms (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is a study that evaluates the performance of CM1 and 4th grade students in mathematics and sciences in many countries around the world. The last Timms study was carried out in 2019. In 2019, in mathematics, the students of 4e in France had obtained an average of 483 points, while the European average was 511. France was in penultimate place countries of the European Union, before Romania.

CM1 students They obtained an average score of 485 points in mathematics, the European average being 527 points. France ranked last in the European Union.

What about 4 years later?

France still in the last

The Timms 2023 study shows that in France, only 3% of students are at the advanced level in mathematics compared to 11% on the international average. Furthermore, between 2019 and 2023, the average score of students is stable in France, but unfortunately this is not reassuring.

Indeed, compared to 2019, France is still poorly ranked. For CM1, with a score of 484 points in mathematics, compared to 522 for European Union countries, France is still the last country in the European Union. For comparison, England are at 552 points for example. And for the 4thwith a score of 479 points compared to 507 on average for EU and OECD countries, France is once again penultimate in the European Unionbefore Portugal.
