“The Citiz car-sharing service is not yet well-known”said Bruno Bernard during a press point organized on Thursday December 3.
If the president of the Metropolis of Lyon believes that cities must gain notoriety, it is still 4 million kilometers, i.e. a hundred times around the Earthwhich were completed in eight months.
Because last April, cities has become a metropolitan public service and the community has strengthened the offer to make it more attractive. While this service only had 100 vehicles and 5,000 users in 2019, Citiz now offers 600 vehicles and count 14,000 users.
This year, 200 vehicles were added to the fleet. “We have also gone from 44 to 220 stations by densifying the offer in the heart of the Metropolis but also with an extension to make the service accessible in 34 municipalities”emphasized Fabien BagnonDeputy Vice-President for Roads and Active Mobility.
Car-sharing service: 3,600 vehicles deployed by 2030 in the Lyon metropolitan area
The Metropolis wants to continue the development of car sharing. Its master plancar sharing also plans the deployment by 2030 of 3,600 vehicles by integrating the offer of private operators.
“Car sharing is part of the range of solutions to combat solo car ownership”insisted Bruno Bernard, praising the diversity of models to meet different needs and the attractive cost of an all-inclusive service including fuel, insurance, 24/7 assistance, maintenance, etc.
The price consists of a cost per reservation time, hourly, day or week, and a cost per kilometer set at 0.42 euros/km then 0.22 euros/km beyond 100 km. The vehicle model and the formula, without or with subscription (16 euros), cause the prices to vary. Thus, renting a small city car costs 22 euros/day with subscription or 39 euros/day without subscription plus the distance traveled.
A loss-making service of 3 million euros
“In terms of pricing, it defies all competition!”testified a user of the service cities. The rise ofcar sharing is based on the evolution of mentalities so that the user is no longer in a logic of possession.
“A car is parked 95% of the time so paying for use makes sense”noted Fabien Bagnon.
Professionals, who represent more than half of 47,000 reservations recorded since Aprilwill undoubtedly drive the movement.
Convince of new users is also a financial issue for the Metropolis of Lyon. “The service must strive towards economic balance”indicated the president. This is far from being the case since Citiz generates expenditure of eight million euros for five million euros in revenue.
