An effect not generalized across the country
The import measure was put in place to respond to the surge in prices and is accompanied by an exemption from customs duties and VAT, until December 31, 2024. However, the impact is not widespread , and several consecutive regions to experience an increase in prices. This reality has been confirmed by consumer protection associations and several parliamentarians. Khalid Setti, representative of the UMT, challenged the Minister of Agriculture on this problem, stressed that better distribution and a regional approach are necessary to guarantee affordable prices in all regions, particularly those with a high demographic concentration. .
Concerns about quality and halal certification
In addition to the question of prices, the quality of imported meats and compliance with halal certification have sparked debate among citizens. The ONSSA (National Food Safety Office) wanted to reassure public opinion by ensuring that these meats are subject to rigorous control according to national and international standards.
The context of the weakness of the national sector
Mohamed Dahbi, secretary general of the General Union of Companies and Professions (UGEP), estimated that meat imports demonstrate the failure of the Green Morocco Plan (PMV) in terms of self-sufficiency in red meat. Despite massive investments to develop the sector, the national herd has declined. The number of elevations dropped significantly, from 940,000 to a few hundred thousand. The cattle herd, which numbered 3.5 million head, is now limited to 2 million. Likewise, in the sheep industry, a surplus of 10 million heads which previously existed is now non-existent.
Special attention for the month of Ramadan
With the month of Ramadan approaching, experts and players in the sector believe that supply and quality management will be decisive. The red meat sector therefore seems to be at a turning point, where concrete measures will have to be taken to ensure price stability and better self-sufficiency.
