The case started in the Eastern Pyrenees. On Friday 5 July 2024, Europol announced the arrest of four suspected members of a Chinese criminal network. This organisation is suspected of having set up a vast system of money laundering between France and Spain.

A crazy seizure in the Pyrénées-Orientales

The investigation began in France in February 2021. At the time, customs officers in the Pyrénées-Orientales intercepted a vehicle equipped with a hidden compartment. Inside, the officers discovered a huge amount of money: 500,950 euros in cash.

“The investigation carried out by the National Anti-Fraud Office (ONAF) under the direction of the Specialised Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille has uncovered a money laundering network,” said the European criminal police agency Europol.

They moved more than a million euros a day

This organization, made up of Chinese nationals, is said to have been operating throughout Europe since at least 2019. The money is said to come from numerous illegal activities: trafficking in counterfeitftax and customs clearance or prostitution.

“The criminal network relied on a sophisticated network of logistics experts who would facilitate the movement of cash across Europe,” Europol continued. A well-oiled organization that allowed the smuggling of cash more than a million euros per day between Spain and France.

Alleged leader of the network arrested

On Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 July 2024, the authorities launched a major operation to put an end to this criminal organisation.

The searches carried out in Madrid, Valence, Alicante et Barcelona mobilized around a hundred Spanish police officers supported on the ground by French customs investigators and Europol experts.

In total, five persons were arrested. Among them was the alleged leader of the network. “Nearly 160,000 euros in cash were also seized during the searches,” the European Criminal Police Agency concluded.
