Thunderclap Sunday 1is December. The Stellantis group has announced the resignation with immediate effect of Carlos Tavares, the general director of the automobile manufacturer. His departure was not expected before 2026, the date of the end of his term.

“In the factory, everyone asks questions. This departure is causing a lot of commotion,” admits Philippe Petry, CFDT union delegate for the industrial center which has 2,200 employees.

In and Trémery, electrified double-clutch gearboxes are manufactured as well as electric motors via two joint ventures: Emotors and E-transmissions. “Stellantis needs the Moselle industrial site to succeed in its transformation to electric. But the hasty departure of Carlos Tavares is subject to questioning. Why at this time? Why so quickly? », continues Philippe Petry. The manufacturer announced the creation of a temporary executive committee which will be chaired by John Elkann pending the appointment of a new general manager during the first half of 2025.

“We knew the strategy led by Carlos Tavares. We will be able to measure the impact of his departure when we know better his replacement for the coming months, then when we have the identity of the new general director. We wonder what we are going to demand and expect from us, knowing that the group's objective will be to get Stellantis' shares up on the stock market. »

The now ex-general director of the car manufacturer had made the Moselle one of his favorite points of departure to detail the group's strategy. Carlos Tavares has visited the Metz-Trémery industrial center numerous times in recent years. It remains to be seen what place the Moselle will hold in the future…
