The political week was already a collector's event on the benches of the National Assembly, particularly on Thursday when the left failed to repeal the pension reform. The next one promises to be even more explosive with the threat of a motion of censure weighing on the Barnier government despite the concessions granted to the RN on the 2025 budget. The Prime Minister is not the only one in the hot seat. In recent days, calls for Emmanuel Macron's resignation have multiplied from all sides.
In this eventuality, Manuel Bompard is already planning for the future. In a letter sent to Bruno Retailleau on Thursday, the coordinator of France Insoumise wants to ensure that everything is ready in the event of an early presidential election. “This would be a major democratic moment for our country. It must be prepared with care,” he wrote on X.
An election between “20 and 35 days” after the resignation
If Emmanuel Macron were to resign, Manuel Bompard recalls that an early presidential election would then have to be held “between 20 and 35 days” later. “As Minister of the Interior, you are in charge of organizing elections in France,” he wrote to Bruno Retailleau. This is why I would like to ask you to inform the different political forces of the arrangements for organizing such an election.”
The rebellious elected official wonders in particular about the collection of 500 sponsorships, obligatory for being a presidential candidate, to know “if the forms have already been printed” and “if the list of elected officials receiving these forms is up to date”. He also questions the minister on the deadline he plans “to ensure French citizens the possibility of registering on the electoral lists”.
