His criminal record was already extensive. On Thursday evening, this 35-year-old marginal man saw his record increase with the heaviest sentence available in the French justice system. Already convicted 13 times, this man was sentenced to thirty years in prison for torturing and killing a pensioner during a drunken evening in Rennes in September 2020. His partner, also marginal, was sentenced to the same sentence by the Ille-et-Vilaine Assize Court. Before this night of violence, she had never had any dealings with the law.

The court found the two marginalized people, aged 35 and 42 respectively, guilty of voluntary homicide preceded by torture or acts of barbarity as well as extortion.

Ears stapled for a code

On the night of September 18-19, 2020, firefighters responded to an apartment fire on the fourth floor of a building in Rennes. A 63-year-old retiree was lying there lifeless, his body bearing multiple traces of violence suffered before his death.

The autopsy of the victim revealed numerous traumas to the face and chest, as well as traces of burns from a white-hot object. The sixty-year-old had even had his ears stapled, in order to extort his bank card code.

Suspicious withdrawals provide clues

It was these “suspicious withdrawals” made with the victim’s card on the evening of the events, and unsuccessful attempts the next day, that put investigators on the trail of a couple who had known the pensioner shortly before his death. After a meeting in a grocery store, the victim had invited them to come to his house. The two outcasts were arrested immediately afterward. They had led a life of wandering since childhood.

Before the court adjourned to deliberate, the two accused spoke to ask the victim’s family for forgiveness and express their regrets, in tears. “I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to get to this point,” the accused told the pensioner’s relatives.
