Two people died in the province of Pattani, one by drowning and the other by electrocution, according to the Thai media Thai PBS, which reports considerable damage in nearly 1,900 villages in this province bordering Malaysia.

According to the Thai Department of Public Relations, the most affected provinces would be Narathiwat (more than 40,000 households affected), Yala (27,000) and Nakhon Si Thammarat (34,000). But the provinces of Songkhla, Pattani, Satun and Surat Thani also suffered significant damage.

Yala is facing its worst flooding in at least two decades, according to residents cited by the Bangkok Post. Floodwaters in the central district (Mueang) of the provincial capital reached nearly two meters deep on Thursday, forcing residents to take refuge on the second floor of their homes.

Neighboring Malaysia, for its part, deplores more than 37,000 people affected in six states this week, reports Channel News Asia. The state of Kelantan, bordering Thailand, is the most affected, with more than 9,000 households affected, or just over 30,000 people, according to a statement Thursday by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Thai meteorologists predict heavy monsoon rains are expected to persist at least until Saturday.
