Asked to react to political news, this Thursday, November 28, the former President of the Republic, François Hollande, opposed a nomination of Lucie Castets if the Barnier coalition fell.
François Hollande, who will vote for censure on budgetary texts in the event of 49.3, said Thursday that he was opposed to the appointment of Lucie Castets if the Barnier coalition fell. He would also be against a resignation of Emmanuel Macron as some on the left and right are demanding.
The former president confirmed on France Inter that he would vote for censure on the budget, in unison with other socialist deputies, and rejected calls for the responsibility of the executive in the face of the risk of financial crisis. The financial situation is “serious”, he admitted, but “the budget presented by Michel Barnier’s government does very little to correct this drift”.
“There was again yesterday (Wednesday) a meeting between Michel Barnier and the presidents of the socialist groups (of the Assembly and the Senate). They made their proposals, none were accepted. So the consequence, if there is 49.3, is that there will be a motion of censure,” he said. If the government is overthrown, however, it has ruled that Lucie Castets will no longer be able to be the candidate of the New Popular Front in Matignon.
“The rebels are obsessed with bringing down Emmanuel Macron”
“It is not possible to return to the situation that was that of Lucie Castets, because there was not the majority to support her in the National Assembly,” he judged, estimating that it would be necessary “to seek a Prime Minister who can have the consent of a majority”. The former president rejected calls for Emmanuel Macron's resignation from LFI, the RN or certain right-wing politicians.
“Having a presidential election in the state the world is in, in the situation the country is in with the markets watching us? Do you think this is the right solution? No, I don’t believe it,” he said. He also justified this position to give the left time – excluding LFI – to prepare for 2027.
“The rebels are obsessed with bringing down, not the Barnier government, but Emmanuel Macron and having a presidential election to present Jean-Luc Mélenchon as a candidate. Listen, I’m sorry, I’m not in that position,” he said.
At the beginning of November, he declared that he wanted a candidacy from the Socialist Party during the next presidential election in 2027. For the former President of the Republic, there cannot be a La France insoumise candidacy which could allow the victory of the left.
