Located in Saint-Benoît, the Campus of Trades and Qualifications (CMQ) Solidarities and well-being of Reunion has just been labeled “Excellence”. The ceremony took place yesterday in Sainte-Anne high school.
The Reunion Communist Party has been proposing for several years the creation of major public interest services to meet the specific needs of the island and offer sustainable solutions. One of the major areas concerns personal assistance, particularly in the context of the accelerated aging of the Reunion population. With almost a third of residents over 60 years old on the horizon of one million inhabitants, it becomes crucial to anticipate the needs for care and support to avoid a situation similar to that observed in France, marked by a lack of preparation in the face of these issues and the mistreatment inflicted on seniors in EPHADs.
The main mission of this service would be to provide care and assistance to elderly or dependent people, while creating long-term jobs in a sector in high demand.
18,000 Reunion Islanders work in this expanding sector
With annual growth of 3% for five years, the medical-social sector is a source of jobs in Reunion. Currently, 18,000 Reunion Islanders work there, making it the second largest employer in the country after National Education. The aging of the population, staying at home, and the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes or obesity are considerably increasing the demand for qualified professionals.
In 2024, around 1,000 positions were to be filled in various professions: nurses, caregivers, specialized educators, or laboratory technicians. Added to this issue are the challenges posed by new professions linked to digitalization and the evolution of care.
Anticipate
The CMQ Solidarities and Well-Being brings together educational establishments, businesses, research centers and associations. Its ambition is in particular to anticipate transformations in the sector. Diplomas ranging from CAP to License or Bac+3 equivalent are offered.
From early childhood to care of the elderly, nearly 30 to 50 new professions have already been identified as priorities.
The labeling of the CMQ Solidarities and well-being illustrates the desire to effectively address the challenges posed by the demographics of Reunion Island on the one hand, and mass unemployment on the other.
With this campus, Réunion joins 7 other CMQs dedicated to personal services and well-being in France.
