How the poison of crack invaded the streets of Lausanne

  • Wastewater analyses show high concentrations of crack or cocaine based in the Vaud capital.

  • Since last year, cocaine inhalation has become the majority practice in secure consumption areas in Lausanne.

  • Unlike in Geneva, where ready-made crack rocks are available, Lausanne users “cook” the cocaine themselves.

I. “Some do not sleep for three days and three nights”

Outside, he would be one of those emaciated faces that we avoid every day in the streets of Lausanne, a look half-urgent, half-pleading, while his lips pronounce the words that we had guessed in advance – “Z’airiez pas une petite pièce?” – with an urgent intonation. But Bryan* is inside the Espace de consommation sécurisé de la Riponne, which opened its doors in May in the capital of Vaud. Despite the blood stains on his sweatshirt, despite the huge dirty bandage that covers his right hand, despite his teeth at the end of their course and the sweat that beads on his forehead, he looks like many interlocutors subjected to questions from journalists, friendly, precise, anxious to convey verified information. We came to talk about crack, and Bryan knows crack: for fifteen years, he smoked “based” cocaine, which is boiled after being dissolved in water and baking soda or (worse) ammonia – up to 25 to 30 doses a day, he assures. Today, Bryan injects coke, and he says he is less anxious: “I’m down to seven or eight pellets a day. When I was smoking, I hadn’t finished the last hit before I was already thinking about the next one.”
