This July 1, 2024 marks the annual grand return of Photography Meetingsin Arles. All summer long, the ancient city is transformed into the capital of photography and hosts no fewer than thirty official exhibitions, not to mention the dozen or so events and exhibitions outside the walls, in the rest of the region. This year, the 55th edition is banking on an ever richer and more eclectic program, opening the way to multiple alternative stories and artists both recognized and emerging.

With an ever-increasing appeal, the Rencontres de la photographie are taking place this season in a series of historic locations in the city. On the program, the first world retrospective of the American documentary photographer Mary Ellen Markwhich will notably see the highlighting of her images of children in the streets of Seattle or of women placed in institutions at the Oregon State Hospital. The Japanese scene will also be celebrated with an exhibition dedicated to 20 Japanese photographers, while Sophie Calle will present a new personal project. So many exhibitions that promise, this year more than ever, many discoveries.
