It is a strategic departmental road. East of Toulouse, thousands of motorists and truckers take the RD 20 every day to bypass Verfeil (Haute-Garonne).
The ring road was to close
As Toulouse News explained to you a few days ago, this 1.5 kilometer long ring road was to close to traffic on Monday November 25, 2024, so that a section of the A 69 motorway could be built there instead, the motorway which should connect Toulouse to Castres.
Except that on Monday, the road did not close. And that this Tuesday, November 26, it was more open than ever, although access was hampered by a surprise action by farmers.
Suspended closure
Why was the initial schedule not respected? Tuesday November 26, 2024 is mayor of Verfeil, Patrick Plicque which gives the answer:
“As you must know, this Wednesday, November 20, the public rapporteur requested the cancellation of the environmental authorizations for this site. The Toulouse administrative court was given 15 days to respond. Also, the Departmental Council of Haute-Garonne has decided to suspend the cutting of the RD20 while awaiting the conclusions of the Administrative Tribunal.”
Unsigned orders
Contacted by Toulouse Newsthe Atosca company confirms the information. “The Departmental Council has not signed the regulatory orders so that we can close the road and begin the work,” indicates André Baudorre, technical director at the Atosca motorway concession.
Work lasting several months
The works planned by Atosca are deconstruction of the RD 20then the highway earthworksin the extension of the interchange currently being built at the entrance to Verfeil.
A project that was meant to last 9 monthsbetween November and August 2025. A project that has already been postponed by two weeks.
Decision in fifteen days
In 15 days, we will know if the Toulouse administrative court decides to cancel the environmental authorizations governing the construction site. the A69 motorway as proposed to him by the public rapporteur on November 20.
If this is not the case, construction can begin. The diversions put in place will allow thousands of motorists to pass through the village of Verfeil.
According to Atosca, 10,000 more vehicles will cross Verfeil every day. The result is traffic jams and longer travel times between Toulouse and Castres.
