Kaolack, Nov 26 (APS) – The program manager at UN-Women, Lorenzo Rovelli, highlighted, Tuesday, the essential role of women for climate action in Senegal, in various fields such as agriculture, management waste, among other things, despite a lack of resources.
”Women already play an essential role for climate action in Senegal, in diverse areas such as agriculture, renewable energies and waste management. However, they are not equipped with the necessary means to scale their activities, earn decent income and create sustainable businesses,” he noted.
Lorenzo Rovelli was speaking, in Kaolack (center), during a capacity-building workshop for around fifty women entrepreneurs on the green economy and green financing, as part of the support project for an economic inclusive green and green financing accessible to women in Senegal.
”The effects of climate change are being felt in Senegal and affect us all, but unequally. It is the most vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls, who are most at risk. They suffer the most serious consequences, which only aggravates already pressing inequalities,” stressed Lorenzo Rovelli.
It maintains that women, who are not yet systematically taken into account in adaptation and mitigation policies, face poverty and inequalities because of the acceleration and intensification of climate change but also of the disproportionate share of non-enumerated work that they carry out.
”Women also do not have access to green financing and climate decision-making at local, national and global levels,” he lamented.
