Dakar, September 26 (APS) – Free Senegal, one of the mobile telephone operators and Internet access provider in Senegal, announced on Tuesday that it would now be called Yas, at the same time as it promised to improve the quality of its coverage and offer affordable prices to users.
”We are going to follow the recommendations of the regulator (the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority), with whom we discuss a lot to improve the quality of coverage and be more accessible in terms of prices,” said its commercial director , Adnane Massaoud, during a press conference in Dakar.
With this change of name, “there are some nice surprises in perspective,” said Mr. Messaoud, saying he was speaking on behalf of the group’s general director.
”We have many programs and we are going to unveil others, concerning support for entrepreneurs and start-ups […] We have solutions to support them in e-commerce, digital transformation, artificial intelligence […] Make digital a priority,” he promised after announcing that Free is now called Yas.
Regarding the quality of services, there are improvements to be made. We are fortunate to deal with a regulator who is very close to consumers, which allows us to improve ourselves,” underlined Adnane Massaoud.
”Senegal has chosen digital transformation. We really want to support this choice […] by offering connectivity solutions, which allow everyone to benefit from this digital transformation,” assured Mr. Messaoud, explaining to journalists the reasons for the operator’s name change.
But ‘it’s not just a name change’
”It’s a simple choice: as soon as we say Yas, we have said yes. When you say yes, you make a commitment […] Obviously, we are not committing to making the future perfect. On the other hand, we are committed to ensuring that people […] feel improvements by listening carefully to our customers, by being in contact with them and by providing them with the best technology, by deploying it effectively in the country and by always looking for solutions proactively, that is to say, without wait for the customer to request them,” he continued.
Adnane Messaoud affirms that ”two things guided this choice”, the change of name of Free Senegal. ”First of all, we are a pan-African group. And as an African proverb says, alone we go fast, together we go very far. Our ambition is to take advantage of […] history, since we have more than a hundred years of experience in telecommunications.”
”The name change is also a promise that we make. It is up to us to follow through on this promise. The name change is a commitment we make publicly to say that we are going to become better… But it is not just about a name change […] The change, you will see it in our actions,” said Mr. Messaoud.
Axian Telecom is the main shareholder of the Yas group, formerly called Sentel, then Tigo, and Free Sénégal since 2019.
