Gabriel Attal, Jordan Bardella and Marine Tondelier will be on BFMTV on July 3, 2024, but not for a debate.

POLITICS – There will ultimately be no debate. At the end of a media imbroglio that lasted several days, the BFMTV channel decided on Tuesday, July 2, and announced that the debate between the two rounds of the legislative elections between Jordan Bardella, Gabriel Attal, and Marine Tondelier would not take place. Instead, several individual interviews will be organized.

Back a few days. Within the left-wing coalition New Popular Front, an agreement had been reached: the first debate on TF1 is for Manuel Bompard (LFI), Olivier Faure (PS) will participate in the second on France 2, and Marine Tondelier (EELV) in the third on BFMTV.

Except that the representative of the National Rally Jordan Bardella told BFMTV that he did not want to debate with the environmentalist. On Monday, he had also challenged Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a figure who is questioned in the party but very involved in the elections, to confront him on set. And snubbed Marine Tondelier, who is also an elected official from Hénin-Beaumont, a town that has been run by the RN for many years.

Debate cancelled

“To be precise, the RN did not veto Tondelier but asked to have a debate with the representative of the main force in the NFP, then asked for Mélenchon,” explained Marc-Olivier Fogiel, the head of the news channel, to Release“For our part, we wanted to set up a debate that made political sense with someone from the NFP who was representative of their forces present…” he added. Which would not be the case for the Greens, the third party in the coalition.

Politico reported that a letter had been sent by BFMTV to the PS and LFI, indicating that the debate would be cancelled if the NFP representative was not a socialist or an insoumis. They did not give in.

Result, “given the impossibility of setting up a debate between the major representatives of the three blocs present for the second round of the legislative elections”the confrontation between Attal, Bardella and Tondelier is cancelled, announced BFMTV this Tuesday evening. Instead, the three political leaders will be questioned in turn on Wednesday from 8:30 p.m.
