The death of the septuagenarian was confirmed by his lawyer Anne Guillerme, who did not wish to make further comments. She thus confirms information from the newspaper Ouest-France.
Dirk R. was imprisoned in June 2023 after opening fire, against the backdrop of a neighborhood conflict, on a British family living in Plonévez-du-Faou (Finistère).
Nicknamed “The Belgian” in his village, the septuagenarian had fired three or four times, killing an eleven-year-old girl and seriously injuring her 50-year-old father in the head. His mother Rachel, who was slightly injured, was also hospitalized, as well as his eight-year-old sister, who managed to escape the shooter.
The “neighborhood conflict” at the origin of the tragedy was linked to “an exasperation at the multiple works undertaken” the British father on his property, Brest prosecutor Camille Miansoni reported shortly after the events.
The noise of the chainsaw particularly bothered the suspect. “There has been deep exasperation over the years which led to this tragedy”according to the magistrate.
The suspect's partner, a Belgian woman in her seventies, was indicted for failure to assist a person in danger and placed under judicial supervision.
The couple, born in Antwerp (Belgium) and with a clean criminal record, tested positive for cannabis and alcohol at the time of the facts, according to the prosecution.
Contacted on Tuesday by AFP, the Brest prosecutor did not respond.
