Created in 2014, the Auguste Vrel support committee has been fighting for a decade for a place in Lisieux (Calvados) to take the name of this local trade unionist and resistance fighter.

Who was Auguste Vrel?

Auguste Vrel (1912-1982), led the 1936 workers’ strike at the Leroy establishments. During the Second World War, he was an active member of the resistance network in the Pays d’Auge.

After the war, he became a municipal councilor in Lisieux, and got involved in numerous social conflicts: Leroy, Dahl, HES, Pien and Glasson, Wonder, Vet-France, there are many examples…

A meeting with the mayor

Until now, requests to successive municipalities had remained unanswered. Sébastien Leclerc had never responded favorably to the collective’s requests, despite numerous actions taken.

To carry out a new “shock” action, the collective positioned itself on Monday June 24 in front of the entrance to the Victor-Hugo space (where the municipal council was held), before the session, to challenge the mayor and elected officials.

The mayor reacted favorably for the first time, by indicating to the collective “that he would grant them an appointment”. But the president of the support committee, Christian Perraud, wishes to remain cautious, “I hope that these are not empty promises, and that it will lead to real discussions”.
