The mayor of Brienon-sur-Armançon is organizing a go-slow operation in his town

The mayor of Brienon-sur-Armançon, Jean-Claude Carra, is leading a go-slow operation with the city’s services on July 2, 2024. He wants to raise awareness about the heavy traffic that passes through his town.

In Brienon-sur-Armançon, driving is complicated this Tuesday, July 2. The reason is that the mayor, Jean-Claude Carra, organized a go-slow operation on the main street. Through this movement, the councilor is protesting the increased traffic of heavy goods vehicles. Usually already heavy, it has increased due to maintenance work on the national road 77 and a diversion that forces vehicles to make a detour through the town.

“We will resume this afternoon”

The mayor, his technical services and a tractor, go back and forth on Rue du Port and Grande Rue. With their hazard lights activated, they drive at a walking pace. “We’ve been driving at 5 km/h since 10:30. Heavy goods traffic needs to be diverted away from Grande Rue and stopped. I’ve been saying the same thing for years, we’ve had enough. Our businesses are suffering, the facades are damaged and there is significant pollution. Our only solution is to protest in this way,” confides Jean-Claude Carra, aboard one of the vehicles.

Last May, following the accident of a truck transporting 7,000 chickens, the elected official had issued a decree prohibiting the circulation of heavy goods vehicles of more than 3.5 tonnes on all roads in his municipality. But the lack of an alternative prevents the implementation of the decree.

To ensure a minimum of order, the police arrived about twenty minutes after the start of the slow operation. “We’re going to continue this afternoon. It’s not to bother people, but we want things to move forward,” the city councilor concluded.
