Work is underway to build a $130,000 pickleball court in the urban park, located near Chibougamau city hall.
An addition that is part of a series of works in this sector.

“We are currently building a synthetic soccer field and a pump track. In addition, we have moved the community garden that was close to the Zéphir. We are rejuvenating the tennis courts with a new surface,” explains Manon Cyr, Mayor of Chibougamau.

“While we were at it, we decided to add three pickleball courts between the tennis courts and the soccer field,” she adds.
Pickleball or light tennis is a racquet sport, played indoors or outdoors, in which two players (singles) or four players (doubles) hit a hollow, perforated plastic ball over a 36-inch (0.91 m) high net using a solid-faced racquet.

Equipment on loan

“We will have two sets of equipment that we can lend. People will be able to come and pick up the equipment at the Recreation Department offices, which are now located at the arena,” explains Valérie Piché, interim director of the Recreation, Culture and Community Life Department in Chibougamau.

For the moment, it is too early to talk about a possible pickleball tournament. “We have not planned to organize one ourselves. However, if citizens are interested in organizing tournaments, they can contact us for the terms and conditions. It will be managed in the same way as the tennis court that is right next door,” adds the recreation manager.
