Scenes of jubilation broke out in several places in the canton after Switzerland’s football victory on Saturday, June 29. However, irresponsible behavior endangered public safety, whether at the wheel of vehicles or through the use of pyrotechnic devices.
Many Neuchâtelois and Neuchâteloises celebrated the victory of the Swiss football team shortly after 8 p.m., in cars or on foot. Unfortunately, some individuals adopted dangerous behavior, endangering the safety of others.
In Neuchâtel, a speeding driver, drunk and under the influence of drugs, climbed onto a pavement. He almost knocked over a very young child in a pushchair near a pedestrian crossing near the Case à chocs. Although the child was not injured, his mother was very shocked. The driver, a 29-year-old Swiss resident of Peseux, was quickly arrested by the Neuchâtel police.
In La Chaux-de-Fonds, several people used pyrotechnic devices in a reckless and dangerous manner on Avenue Léopold-Robert, near the Espacité tower, causing a crowd movement. A 21-year-old man was injured in the eye by one of these devices fired by another individual. He was taken to the hospital in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Other people also had their clothes damaged by these shots.
Investigations have been opened following these incidents. Several motorists will also be reported for dangerous driving, having engaged in aggressive acceleration.
The police remind that it is important to adopt a reasonable and prudent attitude so as not to spoil the party. There is no tolerance for dangerous behavior, and it is imperative to refrain from driving if drinking alcohol.
In Val-de-Travers, processions of vehicles also took place to celebrate the victory. The police, present on the scene, managed to calm the ardor of some party-goers whose behavior was becoming dangerous. Thanks to their rapid intervention, no critical situations were reported, thus allowing the majority of the population to celebrate in safety and good humor.
