Free museums, castles and monuments in Yvelines Sunday July 7, 2024, 1st Sunday of the month

On the first Sunday of the month, many monuments, castles, museums and historical sites in Yvelines open to you for free. But this is not the case for all of them, all year round and some are currently under construction. To help you find your way around, we give you the list of cultural sites in 78, to visit this Sunday, July 7, 2024.

As smart people that we are, we take advantage of the monuments et free museums of first sunday of the month. If Paris sees the opening of the Quai Branly Museum, the Orsay Museum, the Arc de Triomphe and the Hôtel de la Marine, the Yvelines are not left out and many treasures await you.

We head to Saint-Germain-en-Laye to its historic castle to discover the National Archaeology Museum. This museum presents some of the richest archaeological collections in the world, tracing the lives of men and their “inventions” from the origins to the Merovingian era. Different temporary exhibitions allow us to learn more about our ancestors, in a fun and educational way.

The estate, the ruins of the Port-Royal des Champs abbey and the national estate of the Granges de Port-Royal together form the national estate of Port Royal des Champs. Go and discover the ruins of the abbey destroyed on the orders of Louis XIV and the museum installed in the “Petites Ecoles” building. On the 1st Sunday of each month, access to the park is free.

The Toy Museum, inaugurated in September 1976, is located in the heart of the gatehouse of the Royal Priory of Saint-Louis. This museum houses a vast collection of nearly 14,000 objects, including 600 games and toys that offer us a fascinating journey into the world of toys, from Antiquity to the present day. Dolls, stuffed animals, miniature vehicles and racing circuits, board games and construction games, scientific games, skipping ropes or figurines… Fashions come and go, technologies evolve, but children’s passions remain intact. To discover the games of yesterday and today, we rush to take advantage of free entry every first Sunday of the month.

The Hôtel-Dieu Museum houses a collection spanning several centuries of artistic creation on three levels. Located in Mantes la Jolie, a stone’s throw from the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church, the Hôtel-Dieu Museum allows you to discover the city’s medieval past as well as the works of the artist Maximilien Luce. It is open to you free of charge on the first Sunday of each month.

The Maurice Denis Museum is a cultural gem dedicated to the artist Maurice Denis and his contemporaries. The artist’s former home, this museum invites you on a journey through time to discover symbolism and post-impressionism. In addition to its rich collection of works, the museum is distinguished by its accessibility policy: it is free for those under 26 and every first Sunday of the month, allowing everyone to explore the fascinating world of Denis and his peers without emptying their wallets.

You may not have known this, but the Arboretum de Chevreloup is also open to visitors for free on the first Sunday of the month. A vast natural and landscaped area of ​​200 hectares, home to an exceptional collection of 2,500 plant species, the Arboretum de Versailles-Chèvreloup is an integral part of the royal estate of Versailles. For almost a century, the National Museum of Natural History has been developing a real living museum of trees there. The park is open to you from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., last entry around 4 p.m.

The Galerie des Carrosses, nestled in the Great Stables of the Palace of Versailles, is open for free every weekend, even outside the first Sunday of the month. When visiting Versailles, it is a discovery that would be wrong not to make. So we take the opportunity to discover these treasures.
