Euro 2024

It’s (already) the end of the round of 16. The day after France qualified against Belgium (1-0), it’s time for games that we wouldn’t have really imagined. Romania, surprisingly first in their group ahead of the Red Devils, face the Netherlands, disappointing third in the Blues’ group. In the quarter-finals, the winner will face Austria, who managed the feat of finishing ahead of France and the “Oranje”, or Turkey, who held their own in the group stage (two wins in three games). Everything is open, so let’s get to the game.

Every morning, before the matches kick off, TF1info analyzes the day’s schedule across the Rhine.

The goal that needs to be reviewed

Let’s face it, since the start of the Euro, the Blues haven’t really given us the choice to choose their best goal in each match. An own goal against Austria, no goal against the Netherlands, a penalty from Mbappé against Poland… and another saving own goal against Belgium, Monday night, in Düsseldorf. But this one is oh so important. While it seemed like we were heading towards extra time, after a match without spark, Randal Kolo Muani, fresh off the bench, delivered the Blues. Helped, it’s true, by the leg of Jan Vertonghen, the Belgian defender having precipitated the fall of his team… and the qualification for the quarter-finals of the tricolors.

The poster not to be missed

Austria-Türkiye. Kick-off at 9 p.m.

It could have been the round of 16 for Les Bleus, but the verdict for Group D was decidedly different. Despite its opening defeat against the French team (0-1), Austria recovered and eliminated Poland (3-1) and especially the Netherlands (3-2) to finish top of the group. This surprising team, led by Ralf Rangnick, can now have great ambitions, in the least competitive part of the table in the competition.

However, it will have to overcome the Turkish obstacle, and it is not an easy one. Placed in the group with Portugal, against whom it folded (defeated 3-0), Turkey did the job against the surprise of the tournament, Georgia (3-1), before validating its second place in the group by winning against the Czech Republic (2-1). Against Austria, it therefore offers itself a duel between outsiders, who can dream far: in the quarter-finals, the winner of the match will face Romania or the Netherlands. On paper, the last four is not unattainable…
