Parking managed by the company

The question of its management method was put on the table at the last municipal council. Two possibilities were available to the City: opt for a public service delegation as Metz did or choose the management. It is finally the second option that was chosen. The municipality will keep control of the marketing of this facility. An additional budget will be dedicated to it, with income, expenses and perhaps even profits: “What will happen to the management’s income? Because we are not going to build car parks ad vitam aeternam”, asked Philippe Noller (PCF).

The prospect of this return on investment, which is very distant, made Mayor Pierre Cuny smile: “The cost of maintaining a car park is very high. We’ll talk about it again in 25 years…”

“I’m not going to make this information a story for your campaign.”

Brigitte Vaïsse prefers to cultivate the present moment. Incisive, the elected socialist, defeated candidate in the legislative elections under the banner of the New Popular Front, is already anticipating the subscription rate: “This parking lot is dedicated to cross-border workers. So we are not going to have a very low parking price level,” she introduces, without anyone being able to prove her wrong. Do you have a price range to give us? Understand that this interests our fellow citizens.

Pierre Cuny smiled again. Scalded by a precedent, the Metzange park and ride which was blowing a wind of free, the mayor does not seem to consider that the timing, this time, is opportune to open up: “At the time, I was talking about a very low rate and it had turned into free. The P + R subscription is €10 and you have criticized me enough for it. So no, understand that I am not going to make this information a subject for your campaign…”

End of the exchange? No.

Between 60 and 70 €?

“Probably a subscription cost between €60 and €70…” The mayor finally let slip the confidence. Not enough to send him into the scenery. He admits it: this authority must operate and serve as a springboard to boost the parking offer in the city: “We are building facilities for our cross-border citizens, some of whom come from outside. It is a very good thing, but there is no question of the City putting money into the pot to ensure its financial balance.”

The ambition of this majority is to build two new car parks, the first at Place du Luxembourg and the second to ease congestion at the entrance to the city, “on the other side of the De-Gasperi bridge.” Financial resources will therefore have to be found. For Pierre Cuny, maintaining a potentially loss-making system with prices that are too low would lead him down a dead end.
