  • A high-level conference to discuss the essential role of soils and biodiversity in sustainable development
  • Participants’ commitment to promoting the crucial role of soils in the sustainability of our planet

The Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mr. Mohammed Sadiki, and the Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Ms. Audrey Azoulay, took part, on Monday, 1is July 2024 in Agadir, at the International Conference on Soils under the theme “Rooted in Resilience: Revealing the Importance of Soils in Sustainable Development”.

Organized by UNESCO in partnership with Morocco, through the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and Argan (ANDZOA), this conference is being held on the sidelines of the 36th session of the International Coordinating Council of the Programme on Man and the Biosphere (MAB), whose work is taking place in Agadir. It brings together international experts and representatives from more than 30 UNESCO Member States to discuss the essential role of soils in sustainable development. It also aims to promote innovative techniques for conservation and sustainable land management.

In his closing speech at the conference, the Minister stated that the recognition by the international community of the Kingdom’s active role in the field of biospheres, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, May God assist Him, strengthens our commitment to the conservation of natural resources and sustainable development and to improving relations between man and the natural environment. Thus, Morocco, since joining the MAB program, has been fully committed to the protection of its ecosystems. He stressed that today’s conference is an excellent space for sharing experiences and good practices in the service of biosphere reserves, symbolizing our common commitment to the preservation of our natural heritage: water, soil and forest.

Ms. Audrey Azoulay added, “Soils play a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. Yet they are still often neglected or poorly managed. UNESCO calls on the international community to make them a priority. With sixty years of experience in soil science, our Organization will help States advance knowledge and train professionals so that the necessary measures can be taken.”

The work of this meeting, which highlighted the importance of the link between soils, biodiversity, landscape and water management, resulted in an action plan around three objectives: improving soil protection and rehabilitation, filling the gap in scientific knowledge, and strengthening the engagement of young people and communities through education and training programs.
