“Just participating in the Tour de France is really incredible for me. I released a film a few months ago, and it starts when I started watching the Tour de France. I really dreamed about it. I can’t control my emotions. It’s so important. On my first Tour, the Eritrean fans supported me so much. I never thought I could win. Daniel (Teklehaimanot) participated in 2015 and got on the podium (wearing the polka dot jersey, editor’s note) and since then, it has completely changed my dreams, it has taken on another dimension. Last year, I gained experience. But to win this year, when there are all the best sprinters in the world, I have no words. I want to thank my team. Since I joined them, I have only improved. They always believed in me. For three years, we missed the victory. It is not easy to win stages on The Tour de France is really another level. I hope I can win again. The green jersey? It’s always been a dream of mine.”
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step, white jersey) :
“The number one goal was to arrive safe and sound. We saw that there was another big crash. I saved a lot of energy for tomorrow. Apart from the 2022 Vuelta, I have always started my Grand Tours with some doubts and a less than ideal preparation. This one was pretty perfect. My head and legs think that I will be at a good level. You never know, but I went into the Tour with confidence.”
Bryan Coquard (Cofidis, tenth and first Frenchman of the stage):
“It’s not a great sprint for us. I knocked Alexis Renard down, I swiped his wheel. Already, knocking someone down is not pleasant, so when it’s your pilot fish… He’s fine, that’s the main thing. It was a bit chaotic. I was in Pedersen’s wheel, but I was forced to stop pedaling in the last 50 meters. In any case, I couldn’t have won. Tenth is not bad, but it’s not incredible, we don’t come here to finish tenth.”
