Legislative elections: the RN comes out on top for the first time in the first constituency of Eure-et-Loir (Chartres)

Almost 7 out of 10 voters voted, Sunday June 30, 2024, in the first constituency of Eure-et-Loir (Chartres). For the first time, an RN candidate accesses the second round.

A historic turning point?! For the first time, Sunday June 30, 2024, the RN came first in the legislative elections in the first constituency of Eure-et-Loir (Chartres). By gathering 20,576 votes (33.66% of votes cast) in the first round, Emma Minot confirmed the navy blue shift initiated on the evening of the European elections of June 9, with a score of 31.54% for the RN list (14,953 ballots). voting).

In this constituency historically identified by a moderate vote, right or left, voters mobilized en masse on Sunday, with 68.27% participation, the highest in all of Eure-et-Loir. This shows the stakes of the vote while in 2022, less than one in two voters went to the polls (49.32% participation, the lowest since 1997).

The prize for good citizenship in Thivars

While many small towns exceeded the 70% participation mark, Thivars won the prize for civic-mindedness: 617 of the 780 registered voters came to vote, or nearly four out of five voters.

Legislative: Thivars, this village where we like tied candidates

This is the first time that a candidate from Marine Le Pen’s party has passed the 20% mark in the constituency and reached the second round. Jordan Bardella’s party progressed by almost 15 points compared to the first round of the 2022 legislative elections (18.72%), and by 21 points compared to 2017.

Emma Minot benefits from the RN wave observed in rural areas during the European elections a month ago, but not only that. It comes first in Épernon (33.38%), Maintenon (34.02%) and Nogent-le-Roi (44.18%).

The RN surge contained in the city of Chartres

Elected for the first time in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, Guillaume Kasbarian (Renaissance Ensemble) performed well by gathering 32.89% of the votes cast in the constituency. He improved his score from the first round of the 2022 legislative elections (31.32%), but remained behind the RN candidate, who beat him by 471 votes. Voters placed him in the lead in Coudray (36.59%), Champhol (33.42%) and Luisant (37.96%). The RN candidate is preferred in a majority of rural municipalities, with scores sometimes exceeding 40%.

Emma Minot only came in third place in the city of Chartres (24.36%), where the mayor, Jean-Pierre Gorges, officially supported Guillaume Kasbarian, who chose one of his deputies, Isabelle Mesnard (Horizons), as his replacement. The Minister of Housing came in first with 33.22% of the vote in Chartres, ahead of the candidate of the New Popular Front, Jean-François Bridet, by 195 votes.

Disappointment on the left

The vice-president of the Centre-Val de Loire regional council and opposition municipal councilor (Chartres Écologie) must be content with third place in the constituency, with 24.05% of the votes. A disappointment when in 2022, the candidate of Nupes (New Popular, Ecological and Social Union), Quentin Guillemain, closely followed by the RN, had managed to advance to the second round with 22.83% of the votes.

By leading an intensive field campaign, Jean-François Bridet was aiming for first or second place in this first round of voting. He admits to having underestimated the weight of the RN, but nevertheless improves the score of the united left by two points compared to 2022. He is ahead of the outgoing MP in Épernon, but also in Briconville, and the RN candidate in Droue-sur-Drouette.

His withdrawal should allow Guillaume Kasbarian to benefit from a comfortable lead for the second round. It remains to be seen whether participation will be as strong as last Sunday. In 2022, it had fallen from 49.3% to 46.4% between the two rounds.
