Tour de France 2024. The classification of the 3rd stage, won by Biniam Girmay

Long inanimate, the third stage of the Tour de France has become historic. The longest day of this 111th edition, with 230.6 kilometers between Plaisance and Turin, the last 100% Italian stage saw the victory of Biniam Girmay, the first black African cyclist to win on the Grande Boucle. After two trying first days for the organizations and before a fourth stage on Tuesday July 2 which will pass through the Galibier, the runners remained at a slow pace for a long time. The only attacker of the day, Fabien Grellier (Total Energies) tried to liven up the race by gaining around thirty kilometers at the front.

Biniam Girmay historique

In a finale marked by numerous falls with no impact on the general classification since they occurred in the last five kilometers, the young rider (24 years old) from Intermarché Wanty therefore achieved his first success in the Tour de France. He is one breath ahead of Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud De Lie. Spared by the incidents and in contact with the leading group, the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education) takes the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar in the game of accumulating places.
