A few moments earlier, around noon, police officers on patrol in Old Lyon spotted a man in his forties, who seemed to be a little too interested in passers-by’s bags. He even managed to open several of them, without stealing anything.

Phone stolen from English tourist

After these unsuccessful attempts, he followed an English tourist into the cathedral. Authorized by the sacristan to enter the cathedral, the police saw the individual plunge his hand several times into the tourist’s bag, and finally extract a telephone.

They immediately arrested him and recovered the stolen phone. This 44-year-old man, in an irregular situation and known to the police, was taken into custody and denied pickpocketing during his hearing.

He was presented to the public prosecutor’s office on Monday for immediate trial.
