geological and storytelling evening at the Cinq-Coux quarry

Owned by the Mellois en Poitou community of communes, the Cinq-Coux quarry was exploited from the end of the 19th centurye century. Former open-air quarry of Beausoleil located in the Lambon valley, it remained in activity until the 1970s.

Limestone extraction was then mainly intended for the production of stone materials, in the form of aggregates. While the site bears witness to a once significant mining activity in the area, it is also of fundamental scientific interest for the Centre-West of France. The working face in fact exposes five stages of the Jurassic, or nearly 35 million years recorded. These sedimentary deposits illustrate the progression of the sea on our continent and provide information on the evolution of landscapes and species.

Climbing possible on a working face

After exploitation, this quarry with its numerous habitats, was reclaimed by rare or protected fauna and flora. Climbing is possible on a working face.

The site has been accessible to the public since 2006 and is part of the L’Homme et la Pierre network. This evening is offered in partnership with this network.
