“Women are not safe in our country,” said Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider on Monday, presenting an assessment of the fight against gender-related violence. Three areas require improvement.

“It is a serious, sad and revolting social issue. We must bring sordid realities to light, indifference is unacceptable,” declared Elisabeth Baume-Schneider during a National Dialogue with the cantons, cities and the civil society on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In Zurich, the police intervene 20 times a day for domestic violence. Every month, at least one woman is killed in this context in Switzerland, recalled the socialist minister.

La Jurassienne presented the interim report on Switzerland’s 2022-2026 action plan for the implementation of the Istanbul Convention. The measures are on the right track, but “we must change the paradigm.”

Training and awareness

“Substantial progress must be made there by 2026”. The Confederation, cantons and municipalities have defined three areas in which it is particularly necessary to act.

Concretely, a national prevention campaign will be launched at the end of 2025. On this occasion, a central victim support telephone number, free and available 24 hours a day, will be put into service at the Swiss level. It is also planned to further promote non-violent behavior at school and in sport, particularly through study plans.

It will also be necessary to better train and raise awareness among people involved in health, education and justice. To do this, the Federal Office for Equality between Women and Men is currently developing minimum standards for initial and continuing training.

Finally, protection against sexualized violence will also be on the radar. Among the measures planned in this regard are specific awareness campaigns, the development of standards for programs aimed at perpetrators of violence as well as better access to medical and forensic medicine offers.
